Robyn Spady was introduced to handweaving at a young age and has been weaving for over 50 years. She completed HGA’s Certificate of Excellence in Handweaving (COE-W) in 2004 with the specialized study Loom-controlled Stitched Double Cloth. Robyn is fascinated by the infinite possibilities of crossing threads and loves coming up with new ideas to create fabric and transform it into something new and exciting. She is committed to turning the weaving world on to uncommon and advanced weave structures, and passementerie techniques. Robyn is also the founder and editor of Heddlecraft® magazine.
Weave Study Day – Part 1 (Registrants must do both parts)
If anyone tried to create a Venn diagram of weaves, everything would overlap with something. This two-seminar weave study is designed to review and compare a variety of weaves to better understand their independence and interrelationship. For example, when is the treadling for a double diagonal twill little more than turned double two-tie, or is something completely different? What can we learn about the components of a tie-up for double two-tie and its many derivations and how they relate to other weaves? This two-seminar weave study is an in-person opportunity designed to generate discussion among participants, elevate the visibility and nuances of different weaves, and develop a better understanding of how different weaves interrelate and how they uniquely distinguish themselves. Special focus will be made on tied weaves, double diagonal twills, and Beiderwand.
The objective of this two-part seminar is to leverage a teaching method referred to as “collaborative/cooperative.” Participation is encouraged, but not mandatory. Participation does require familiarity with the weaves being covered and discussed. A reading list will be provided ahead of CW Seminars 2024 to provide an opportunity for participants to familiarize themselves with the weaves. Participants are also welcome to suggest a particular weave to be included.
